with Sheril Antonio

Dr. Sheril Antonio is an Associate Arts Professor in the department of Art and Public Policy at
the Tisch School of the Arts, New York University. She is the author of Contemporary African
American Cinema, Peter Lang, 2001 and her other works include a feature essay for Black
Camera, “The Urban-Rural Binary in Black American Film and Culture”, Indiana University Press,
2009 which includes 2 of her original photographs; “Matriarchs, Rebels, Adventurers, and
Survivors: Renditions of Black Womanhood in Contemporary African American Cinema”, Sight &
Sound Supplement, July 2005. More recently she co-authored with Gail Segal the book
Dramatic Effects with a Movie Camera, Bloomsbury Press, 2021, and her latest published work
is an essay, titled “More than a Matriarch: Cicely Tyson’s Rendition of Aging Black Womanhood
(In Contemporary Media)” which can be found at The Scholar and Feminist Online, Summer

She currently teaches The Anatomy of Difference: The Other in Film/Media and received the Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr. Faculty Award in 2020 from New York University. She has been a
member of the AAEH since 2010 and recently joined the Montauk Artist Association. Her
photographs have also shown in the Members Show at Guild Hall since 2011 and at NYU/Tisch
where she teaches.
