Jim Hayden is a native New Yorker. Born and raised in Rockaway Beach, he was influenced since early childhood by nature, the ocean and the changing moods and textures of the beach.

His art education took him from The School of Visual Arts in New York to summer residency at the prestigious Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine, to the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned his Bachelor and Master of Fine Arts Degrees.

During his studies at Penn he coordinated audio-visual and mixed-media exhibits at the University American Indian Gallery, and taught printmaking and graphic design. After graduating, he taught printmaking at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn.

The next five years, Jim lived in Honolulu, where he worked as a media specialist at the University of Hawaii. Upon return to New York, he, along with his wife, established and successfully managed for many years a company providing graphic design, typesetting and commercial printing services.

Jim is currently a resident of East Hampton, concentrating full time on art. His life-long experience of working in the printing field has led to his choice of materials – he creates fluid, metamorphic images on glass, using oil-based printing inks as his medium. Creating his own brushes, and using Sumi ink, he produces large, seemingly three-dimensional drawings on paper. He also incorporates these images in his series of abstract photographs.

Jim has exhibited at several venues in the past, among them The Pratt Center in New York, Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia, and more recently at the Surface Library Gallery in Springs, the Crazy Monkey Gallery in Amagansett, Ashawagh Hall in Springs, and Guild Hall in East Hampton.

He is a member of the Crazy Monkey Gallery Artist Cooperative and the East End Photographers Group. Jim served as the President of the Artists’ Alliance of East Hampton from 2009 to 2014..
