Jana Hayden was born and grew up in Prague, Czech Republic, a city steeped in history and culture. She studied photography at the School of Graphic Design in Prague, and for one year worked as a staff photographer at the Czech National Film Studio, Barrandov.
A collection of photographs of Prague’s ancient Jewish cemetery had earned her a scholarship at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Fine Arts. Here she pursued further knowledge in graphic and fine arts, while teaching photography to undergraduate students, and obtained her Master of Fine Arts degree.
In the early 1990’s, Jana took series of classes in ceramics and sculpture at Hofstra University, and expanded her creative expression to include not only graphic arts and photography but also work in clay.
At present, Jana has an established studio in East Hampton, where she produces a variety of wall sculpture and mixed media art, using several methods of firing and glazing – Raku, pit-firing, painting fired clay pieces with oils, acrylics and metallics. She also produces pastel and watercolor drawings, as well as photographs. Her inspiration comes from nature, with its endless variety of shapes, textures and hues.
Her exhibits in the past included such venues as the Contemporary Art Institute in Philadelphia, The Philadelphia Museum of Natural History, and the Kreutzer Gallery at the University of Pennsylvania. More recently, she has exhibited at the Surface Library Gallery in Springs, the Crazy Monkey Gallery in Amagansett, Ashawagh Hall in Springs and Guild Hall in East Hampton.
Jana is a member of the Artists Alliance of East Hampton, the Crazy Monkey Gallery Artist Cooperative, and the East End Photographers Group.
